Twickie gets Twitter conversations right

February 23rd, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

With the advent of “@ replies” on Twitter, conversations on the online service have begun to get harder and harder to follow. That is until now. Thanks to Chris Pirillo’s inventiveness and the coding abilities of view2gether, a new service called Twickie is now available to track your conversations.

When you login, you will be able to see all of your tweets, underneath of which you will see two buttons. The “Get @s ↑” button will get all of the tweets that were @ replied and display them in descending order (newest first). Likewise, the “Get @s ↓” will retrieve those tweets that were @ replied and display them in ascending order (oldest first).

It doesn’t end there, however, you can also copy and paste a full HTML version of the tweet conversation to your blog (or other place on the interwebs that accepts HTML). When you are viewing a conversation, just click the “Copy Full” button and then copy/paste the resulting HTML code snippets. You can also click Advanced to get options for copying only CSS or HTML.

If you end up using the service often (which, why wouldn’t you?) then you might want to install the “Bookmarklet.” Just drag the link that says “Bookmarklets” to your bookmark toolbar. Now when you are on a Twitter permalink page you can click this bookmark to instantly see all of the conversations that follow along with the tweet you’re currently viewing.

Amazingly, this service is free and easy to use. Just head over to http://twickie.pirillo.com/ to get started. Below is an example of the pasted HTML code that the service gives you. Sure beats taking screenshots of the Twitter page, doesn’t it?

jakematic: Thought about it. Not excited to drive all that way just to see the opening.

Creating iPhone-specific sites with RSS feeds and Dashcode

February 23rd, 2009 § 1 comment § permalink

Dashcode_icon_CB.jpgLast week I told you about my iPhone site that I create using Dashcode. These sites are extremely easy to create using Apple’s widget creation software that comes packaged with the Xcode download. In this post, I’m going to walk you through turning any RSS feed into an iPhone site that is updated automatically when new entries are created.

This things first, you’ll need an RSS feed from a blog, Twitter feed, etc. When you have Dashcode installed, you can launch it by going to /Developer/Applications. This is where Xcode, IB, and Dashcode are stored. When you first launch the application you will be presented with a pop-up that asks you wish type of template you would like to create. For this tutorial we’ll be using the Web Application > RSS template.

When you click Choose, your template will be built. As of now you have a fully functional iPhone web application; however, you need to input your RSS feed for it to actually work. Under the Application Attributes section you will be able to add your RSS feed in the Feed URL section. Be sure to type the feed in exactly as it is (for example, my blog feed is http://corybohon.com/feed/). From this section you can also edit the number of articles that are displayed, and the date ranges.

You now have a completely useable web app. To test it, click the “Run” button in the top-left corner of the screen. Dashcode will then launch the iPhone simulator and show you what the web app looks like in mobile Safari. Now let’s export is and move it to a internet-accessible server.

Back in Dashcode, click the Share button. Under the account, select localhost. This will export the web app as a folder ready for you to upload to your web server. Click the “Save to Disk…” button and a folder will be created in the location you specify. If you have a MobileMe account, you can easily add it and upload it straight from Dashcode by clicking on the new account option from the drop-down box.

I.O.U.S.A. The Movie tells all about the economic situation

February 19th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

I recently overheard someone talking in one of my classes about a movie they recently watched for a business class. I immediately Googled the title and found that there was a 30-minute preview of it online. I.O.U.S.A. is the name of it, and it is about the current economic situation that we’re in. The movie goes into detail about how we’ve been in a downward spiral in the past few years, and that if we don’t get a grasp on it soon, it could ultimately end in destruction. I’ve embedded the 30-minute clip of the movie at the top.

Note: While it is a good watch, it’ll no doubt leave you in a depressed mood.

iPhone portal for my blog

February 16th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

iPhone_CoryBohon_Site__iPhone.jpgI have been wanting to create an iPhone portable for my blog, and today was the day that I felt productive enough to start that endeavor. While in its early stage, you can still use it. If you want to read my blog on-the-go, then why not add http://corybohon.com/iphone to your bookmarks?

This site was created using Dashcode, Apple’s widget/iPhone-specific site creation tool which is part of the Xcode IDE. Later this week, I’ll do a tutorial on creating iPhone sites using the Dashcode application, so stay tuned for that.

In the meantime, keep watching the site as I refocus it and begin to post more articles here.

Zune/iPod gets mention on Family Guy…

February 16th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

On last night’s Family Guy episode entitled “Ocean’s Three and a Half,” the Zune got an impromptu mention. As Lois’ father Carter Pewterschmidt is holding a party with some famous people, he walks up to Bill Gates and asks if he could have some help “programming his Zune.” Carter then remembers that he has an iPod and exclaims, “Oh wait, I have an iPod like the rest of the world.”

You can watch the full clip on Hulu (in the player above); you can also watch the full 20-minute episode from this link.
