Change Dockables! Icons

May 14th, 2007 § 5 comments

Many of you have been emailing me and posting comments about changing the icons for Dockables! I am still working on new icons for Dockables and also a new program to complement Dockables (you will be hearing about this shortly). Until I get ready for the next Dockables! release, here is a way to change the icons:

Change Icons for Dockables

1) Install the Apple Developer Tools (this can be found on your Mac OS X CD that came with your computer).

2) Once you have installed the Developer Tools, create your icons using your favorite photo editor (Adobe PhotoShop is recommended). You should a set of four icons: small (16×16 pixels), large (32×32 pixels), huge (48×48 pixels), and finally, a thumbnail (128×128 pixels).

3) Save your icons individually as .gif or .tiff files to preserve the transparency in the images.

4) Open “Icon Composer” by going to Macintosh HD > Developer > Applications > Utilities > Icon Composer

5) Drag and Drop your icons (.tiff or .gif) onto the corresponding four holders in Icon Composer.

6) To install your icons on Dockables! applications, click the “file” menu then “Save As.” Then navigate to the applications (Applications > Dockables), and navigate into the individual app that you want to change. You will need to replace the file “applet.icns.” It is located inside of the application (for example: Shut-Down > Contents > Resources > applet.icns). Click save and then “replace” to replace the file.

7) You’re done! Repeat for all the applications you want to change the icons of.

How can (or can I) make additional lines? I notice that limited to using only your 2 lines provided in the package. Thanks!

You can change the icons just like you can for any of the other Dockables apps. There is a link in the manual for changing icons. You can make a 128×128 pixel icon in photoshop or another app that you can use to export a tiff or gif. Just follow the link in the “About Dockables!” manual in the Dockables folder.

To make more lines I just copy/pasted them in the dock snaps folder. That way they are exactly the same, ad you many of them.

Wow, that was terrible. Try number two…

To make more lines I just copy/pasted them in the dock snaps folder. That way they are exactly the same, and you have as many of them as you want. Great tool!

Just stumbled onto Dockables. I haven’t tried any of the applications yet, but I am fairly certain I will find them useful. Anything that saves me time is always appreciated, and I believe these will do that once I start remembering that they are available on my dock.
    Thanks
