Dockables! Now 8x’s as great!

May 29th, 2007 § 9 comments § permalink

Today, I am releasing Dockables 1.0.3. Dockables has received great recognition, most notably an Apple Staff Pick.

Dockables 1.0.3 includes one new program, Close Apps. Close Apps allows you to one-click close all open apps for your user (Thanks to Justin Wallace for the request). New icons are also a new feature of this version of Dockables.

If you looked closely at the screen shots above, you will have noticed that all of the Dockables are behind a black line. I like to call that little black line a “Dock Snap.” DockSnaps are a new feature in Dockables as well… They allow you to put a border anywhere on the dock to separate applications.

I hope that you enjoy this new version of Dockables, it is avaliable as a free download here. Just like with all the previous versions of Dockables, if you have any recommendations about a specific Dockable you would like to see in the next version, reply to this post, and I will try to build it into the next version!

Change Dockables! Icons

May 14th, 2007 § 5 comments § permalink

Many of you have been emailing me and posting comments about changing the icons for Dockables! I am still working on new icons for Dockables and also a new program to complement Dockables (you will be hearing about this shortly). Until I get ready for the next Dockables! release, here is a way to change the icons:

Change Icons for Dockables

1) Install the Apple Developer Tools (this can be found on your Mac OS X CD that came with your computer).

2) Once you have installed the Developer Tools, create your icons using your favorite photo editor (Adobe PhotoShop is recommended). You should a set of four icons: small (16×16 pixels), large (32×32 pixels), huge (48×48 pixels), and finally, a thumbnail (128×128 pixels).

3) Save your icons individually as .gif or .tiff files to preserve the transparency in the images.

4) Open “Icon Composer” by going to Macintosh HD > Developer > Applications > Utilities > Icon Composer

5) Drag and Drop your icons (.tiff or .gif) onto the corresponding four holders in Icon Composer.

6) To install your icons on Dockables! applications, click the “file” menu then “Save As.” Then navigate to the applications (Applications > Dockables), and navigate into the individual app that you want to change. You will need to replace the file “applet.icns.” It is located inside of the application (for example: Shut-Down > Contents > Resources > applet.icns). Click save and then “replace” to replace the file.

7) You’re done! Repeat for all the applications you want to change the icons of.
